What is a WPH (Water Preheater)?
A Water Preheater (WPH) is a type of heat exchanger that preheats the feed water prior to entering the boiler drum or economizer. The aim is to use waste heat (typically in the form of flue gases) to increase the temperature of the feed water, thereby increasing boiler efficiency and lowering fuel consumption.
Working Principle
- Cold feed water enters the WPH.
- Hot flue gases from the boiler pass over the heat exchange surfaces.
- Heat is transferred from the flue gas to the feed water.
- Preheated water then enters the boiler, requiring less energy to convert into steam.
This results in:
- Reduced thermal shock to the boiler
- Faster steam generation
- Lower fuel usage
Where is WPH Used?
- Industrial boilers
- Thermal power plants
- Process heating plants
- Industries: Textile, Paper, Food Processing, Sugar, Pharmaceuticals, etc.
Types of WPHs Tubular WPH:
- Steel tubes inside a shell
- Simple, rugged, easy to maintain
Shell & Tube Type:
- Used in high-capacity systems
- Better heat exchange efficiency
Spiral Coil Type:
- Compact and efficient
- Often used where space is tight
Materials Used
- Mild Steel (MS) – general use
- Carbon Steel – high temperature
- Stainless Steel (SS304/SS316) – for corrosion resistance and clean water systems
