What is an Air Preheater (APH)

An Air Preheater (APH) is a heat exchange device used to heat the air before it enters the furnace or combustion chamber of a boiler. The main purpose is to improve thermal efficiency by recovering heat from flue gases that would otherwise be wasted.

Working Principle

  • Flue gas exits the boiler after combustion and passes through the APH.
  • Cold air (combustion air) is drawn from the atmosphere.
  • The APH transfers heat from the hot flue gas to the cold incoming air.
  • As a result, air entering the furnace is preheated, reducing the fuel required for combustion.

This process leads to:

Types of Air Preheaters Tubular Type:

  • Has steel tubes where flue gas and air pass.
  • Simple design, often used in medium-capacity boilers.

Plate Type:

  • Thin metal plates stacked in a chamber.
  • Compact design, good for small spaces.

Rotary Type:

  • Cylindrical rotating matrix that transfers heat from flue gas to air.
  • Common in large-capacity boilers.
  • Very efficient, but more complex.
